TIME TRAVEL!!! :D [00:07] From everything I've heard the Butterfly Effect was a huge steaming pile of [00:08] I just heard it was mediocre [00:08] I'm not saying the acting or the special effects were great, but I really liked the story and the whole idea. [00:09] What's the story? Some guy can go back in time so he keeps trying to save the past but ends up ruining it more, or something? [00:09] ...Yeah... [00:09] But I didn't know anything about the movie at all before I watched it, so maybe that made it better. [00:10] That's what I got from all the previews and stuff [00:10] Sounds like that one episode of the SImpsons [00:10] Yeah, except this isn't comedy. [00:10] And that kind of plot idea goes back way before the simpsons [00:11] http://www.rottentomatoes.com/click/movie-1129226/reviews.php?critic=columns&sortby=default&page=1&rid=1241931 this review sums up the plot well enough [00:12] *** Kloroplast (rljf_1@dork-2D9A98F0.no.no.cox.net) Quit (Quit: ) [00:14] "First, if Evan blacked out at the time of these traumas, how did he then remember the events well enough to recount them in his journal?" Uh, he didn't, he just knew something had gone wrong, and tried to piece what people told him together. [00:15] *** Jeff (EcoFireKit@ham.unicycle) has joined #banjo-kazooie [00:15] *** Colliwobble sets mode: +v Jeff [00:15] * Jeff stabs Edtheserver [00:15] The Back to the Future Trilogy has handled the concept of time travel best, I think [00:15] also, hi all [00:16] 'having an "Oz" moment' <-- what's that? [00:16] What if he went back and destroyed the journal?!?!?! [00:17] Oh, are you talking about The Butterfly Effect> [00:17] Oz is a prison show with prison moments [00:17] I've heard nothing but bad things about that movie [00:17] DJ is saying good things, listen to him and you'll hear one! [00:17] What??? [00:17] Everyone was supposed to hate that movie [00:18] Tell that to DJ [00:18] Ebert hated it, too!!! [00:18] http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/ebert_reviews/2004/01/012301.html [00:18] Do you now see the error you have made, DJ? [00:19] Are there any time travel movies that actually deal with something similiar to the butterfly effect, ie one, miniscule, utterly insignificant event turns out to have a huge impact on future events [00:19] Didn't Back to the Future? [00:19] I think The Simpsons did it best [00:19] Back to the Future dealed with significant events, like the kid's parents meeting and such [00:19] Homer swats a fly, and suddenly Flanders is the dictator of the world, etc. [00:20] I mean stuff like you find a penny on the ground, do you pick it up or not? Your decision, through a long series of coincidences, has a huge impact on the future [00:20] What about Sliding Doors? [00:20] Never saw that [00:20] I saw that, actually [00:20] Or at least the first part of it [00:21] dealt, Yumblie [00:21] kittie [00:21] 2wks 8hrs 24mins 52secs have passed since I last saw Jeff mention baby cats! ^_________^;;;; [00:21] :( [00:21] 2 weeks, kewl [00:21] Good Job! [00:21] Give me a prize, [00:21] It'd be fun to have a movie where some guy's trying to save the past and spends the whole movie trying to find out where things went wrong, only to find it was something really stupid like he said "hi" to a random person, so he has to stop his past self from doing that [00:22] I think most of those time travel movies are unreasonable. I don't think picking a flower would change much. [00:22] Well, that's kinda what this is about, Yumblie. [00:22] But it would!!! [00:22] It could! [00:22] How so? [00:22] He ends up fixing everything by saying 1 thing. [00:23] I think we did time travel best!! http://www.lycanthrope.net/~YBK/rmb/timetravel.html [00:23] If you pick a flower the flower won't make more flowers and the bee population will die and the Bee Eating People won't have bees to eat so they'll become cannibals and eat each other and then scientists will find their bones and discover that there is no God and then God will strike down all mankind [00:23] Heh [00:23] (note: it's been a long time since I read that so it might be embarrassingly bad) [00:23] Say, for example, I'm walking along, and suddenly a bee flies past me. This causes me to think about bees. I bump into my friend. I ask him about bees, he tells me about bees. He goes home, remembers our conversation, and decides to look up bees. His internet search takes him to a page that has spyware and shuts down his computer. Because his computer is down, he can't complete his report, so he fails his class... [00:23] Yeah, but there are a lot more flowers out there to make flowers for the bees to have. [00:23] Its terribly outdated, bhlaab :( [00:23] Because he failed his class, he can't graduate, and he never invents the cure for cancer or whatever [00:24] Then you go back in time and make sure bees never existed! [00:24] That "thinking about bees he decides to look it up" thing is kind of a stretch [00:24] How so? [00:24] "I'm bored... WAIT!! Didn't Yumblie say something about Bees today?!?! I must research this!!" [00:24] Why not? [00:25] And couldn't he use someone else's computer? [00:25] Or go to the library or something? [00:25] You're completely missing the point! [00:25] Yeah [00:26] The point is that CATS [00:26] Every single thing you do throughout the day has an impact on future events, whether you're aware of it or not [00:26] Do one thing differently and it may not change much, but it could possibly change a lot. It's impossible to tell. [00:27] So if decided to drop a pencil on the ground it will have some effects on the future? [00:27] In the movie world, sure. [00:27] Yes, it could! [00:27] Don't you people ever think in the big picture? [00:27] I do!!! [00:28] Like right now I'm playing with a beanie babie dog! [00:28] Yes.. if SJJ drops his pencil, he'd have to bend over and pick it up... And then something about fire in north dakota [00:28] I don't see how dropping the pencil next to me could change the future, now, but it might if I were to drop a pencil, say in class. [00:28] Well [00:28] Surely this will cause the genocide of millions in the future! It's all part of my evil plot. [00:28] What if my bending over causes me to hit my head on my desk [00:28] Isn't that right, Weenie?? [00:28] bhlaab, can you EVER take anything seriously? [00:28] This could cause brain damage and prevent me from doing a good thing [00:28] This is a serious conversation? [00:29] OR it could alter my brain thingies to make me smart [00:29] Or it could just hurt [00:29] I explained what I'm talking about and you're like "oh I drop a pencil and Wyoming explodes huh!??!!?" [00:29] Then I better not drop a pencil! [00:29] * Jeff drops a pen [00:30] * SergeantJamJars drops a cil [00:30] Uh oh! [00:30] Hahaha, Wyoming just explodes whenever someone drops a pencil [00:30] * Jeff checks CNN.com for breaking news [00:30] I see where you're coming from, and yes through a series of "maybe"s and "what if"s, picking a flower could lead to the next Hitler. But thinking realistically, those sci fi movies are being pretty unreasonable. [00:30] Because "picking flower = hitler" makes for an interesting story [00:31] How about we make a movie where the Butterfly Effect goes horribly wrong, so every time somebody does something the effects that would happen 1,000,000 years later happen instantaneously! [00:31] Do movies actually do that? I thought most movies just dealt with major events [00:31] The only thing I have to agree with that article on is how she never read (past tense) his journals. And the acting isn't anything to write home about (But seriously, was the Matrix's?). But I really liked the idea about how say 1 thing different, and you change your life and the lives of many people you know. [00:31] There's that story of the guy stepping on the cockroach and it ends humanity [00:31] Heh [00:31] Now THAT'S a bit of a stretch [00:32] * Jeff pokes Yumblie [00:32] But when I say "picking flower = hitler" I'm talking LOTS of steps in between, not like one or two [00:32] *** Mew-Away is now known as MewMewtwo45 [00:32] How about about MEWMEWTWO45 EX{:PDES! [00:32] Yeah, but most of them are still "what if"s and "maybe"s [00:33] *explodes [00:33] {:P [00:33] Well of course they're what ifs and maybes, because humanity is still here [00:33] Because you picked the flower you ruin the beauty of the field of flowers and someone sees the field with a flower missing and he becomes so enraged about the missing flower he decides to throw everyone into gas chambers [00:33] http://www.canjo.net/dj/img/paintgame_march27-28/jeff-whenyoudothis.jpg [00:33] Yeah, so thinking realistically picking a flower would not lead to Hitler. [00:34] Realistically no, but it could have more self-centric effects, like your career choice or someone you meet [00:34] DJ> what [00:34] Though even then it's a stretch, but it's still possible [00:34] I think that's even a stretch. [00:34] bhlaab's line of the cockroach ending humanity ust made me think of that pic. [00:34] It's possible on some really small tiny level [00:34] *** Jeff is now known as Away [00:34] How about picking TWO flowers? [00:35] And some say that the very act of going back in time would drastically change the future, because you're displacing atoms and molecules that were previously there and stuff [00:35] You pick two flowers and your dad sees you and disowns you and you become so lonely and angry you decide to throw everyone into gas chambers [00:36] How about burning all the flowers in the field? [00:36] That would have an affect [00:36] That's not exactly an insignificant event [00:37] Why all the smoke from the fire could be the extra nudge that destroys the o-zone and destroys the earth!!!! [00:37] I thought only some types of smoke can destroy the o-zone [00:37] -some +certain [00:38] some was fine [00:38] Well maybe not that but it would completely over the environment in the field. [00:38] Well, I still say you should go out and see it. Or rent it if it's not in theatres any more. Or just use http://69.50.170.99/sn//torrents/1657/The[1].Butterfly.Effect.DVDRip.XviD-DMT-avi.torrent [00:38] This reminds me of that short story called "The Sound of Thunder" [00:38] Don't use suprnova to get movies [00:38] Why not...? [00:39] the mpaa has been known to monitor some of the more major releases, like newer movies and stuff [00:39] a couple people on SA have gotten cease and desist letters from the MPAA forwarded to them by their ISP
